Synthetic Gemstones

Synthetic gemstones, also known as Lab gems or laboratory gems, are gemstones that have the same properties as natural gems but then created in a laboratory. These synthetic stones are popular among jewellery makers and jewellery shoppers because they are more practical and are widely available.

Uncut synthetic gemstones

There are currently a number of precious stones produced in laboratories worldwide. In the U.S., among the popular stones synthetically produced laboratories are turquoise, diamond, sapphire, ruby, quartz, alexandrite, lapis lazuli and garnet. Synthetic gemstones should not be confused with imitation stones, which were usually made of glass. The latter does not have any gemmological value, while the former is identical to natural gemstones in almost every way. And that includes the crystal structure, chemical composition, colours, hardness, and other characteristics.
