It is a good idea to visit jewellery shows once in a while. These shows offer visiting people incredible discounts of up to 40% on certain items. Previously, these shows were open to the general public free of charge but recent jewellery shows now require people who want to get in to either buy a ticket or have an approved free pass. This change in policy is due to certain shoplifters who take advantage of lax security during these shows. Many jewellery items are small but have high monetary values, making them an enticing target for people with quick hands. Theft is a crime of opportunity and the sheer number of people jostling to watch the items on display often distracts the counter sales persons. It is not uncommon that fine jewellery is lacking at the end of the day. Stricter admittance is necessary to filter and ensure only serious buyers can get in. A career in the jewellery industry can be pretty rewarding, both financially and personally. Appraisers and designers get fairly decent pay compared to other professions. Some schools offer both the degree and non-degree programs (short-term courses with a certificate award) in the curriculum. A few people take jewellery courses as a hobby because it has excellent remunerative prospects as well such as eventually becoming a jewellery store manager, highly-respected artist jewellery designer, well-paid gemstone setter or graduating into a store owner. A lot prefer to be a jewellery appraiser or a metal smith such as goldsmith or silversmith.
