Shop for Pearl Jewellery
Pearls are some of the most valued gemstones in the jewellery business. Although not really stones because they come from organic materials, they are gems nonetheless. The value of a pearl comes from its iridescence (optical phenomenon to change hues when viewed from different angles, like a rainbow), near-perfect shape and hardness that comes from the nacre (mostly calcium carbonate). When shopping for pearl jewellery, it might be relevant if it is a saltwater or freshwater pearl, since the two types of pearls are different with varying desirable qualities. It also pays to know that there are natural pearls and cultured pearls (developed by human intervention) such as baroque pearls which are not exactly spherical but often oblong-shaped. Cultured pearls can be either freshwater (often oval in shape) while saltwater cultured pearls tend to be more spherical with a sharp tail (termed as tear-shaped pearl). Unlike other forms of jewellery, pearls are mostly associated with human feminine features such as beauty and charm. Pearls are crushed into powder for use in cosmetics and medicine, and sometimes as paint.
