Next to diamonds, pearl is inarguably women’s best friend. Pearl may not be like diamonds which are forever, but come close. Pearl as organic material has a certain hardness not found in other jewellery materials. It has its own attractive characteristics (e.g. iridescence and nearly perfect spherical shape) that make it highly valuable. Pearl lovers and collectors of pearl jewellery can instantly detect or determine whether a pearl is salt water or freshwater. There are also distinct features between natural pearls and cultured pearls. Necklaces and earrings are the common pearl jewellery; although there are others types too like pendants. South Sea and Tahitian pearls are some of the best quality pearls available. There are black pearls also which are quite rare.
