Although an expert jeweller can determine some gems to be genuine just by a glance, it is sometimes necessary to use more sophisticated equipment when evaluating jewellery. Today, there are tester kits that can prove useful in determining the purity of gold, platinum, silver and other precious metals. Available on the market is a simple device similar to a marking pen that can determine easily and quickly gold bullion, sterling silver and even palladium from white gold from platinum. This so-called marking pen does not utilize acid, which is harmful to the skin (can cause itching) and dangerous when inhaled.

Acid tests were previously the preferred method in testing purity of precious metals, but due to concerns cited above, the acids are gradually being replaced by other methods. However, as modern expensive electronic test kits usually miss white gold and most antique jewellery that has yellow gold, the old method remain popularly use.
