Gold Tester

A gold tester must provide accurate readings on the purity of the gold being tested. As a brief background, one karat of gold is 24/24 (or 100% pure gold) while an 18 karat gold is 18/24 of pure gold and 6/24 other metal/s. The problem with testing gold is that gold that was produced in different times have differing purity values because no standards were adopted at that time yet. Although the word “karat” came from the Latin “carratus,” which means exact or uniform weight, it is being used specifically to refer to the purity of gold used in the jewellery. This is to further distinguish it from “carat” in diamonds and other precious gemstones, which denotes a unit of weight. There are two basic types of gold testers: the manual tester (using acids, touchstones and needles) and the modern but also expensive electronic gold tester. The manual tester has limited capability while the electronic is the most complete because it can test 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 karat gold.
