Components

Cleaning precious jewellery is a detailed and very involved job. It also entails some degree of risk because an inexperienced cleaner can damage the jewellery. It takes research and years of experience to undertake this task with some confidence and accuracy. The two main components of a jewellery cleaning solution are citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. Contrary to what many believes, even gold and silver also rust but not that easily. Long periods of storage will still take their toll on precious metals, since rust can occur even with the oxygen from the air. The sodium bicarbonate is actually a form of salt (not table salt but from the mineral group of salts in a chemical element table) and is widely used as a cleansing agent like soap. It is mild and will not corrode metals or precious stones in jewellery. Its common name is baking soda or cooking soda, sometimes, it is also called bread soda.
