In buying diamonds, there are four main characteristics that should be examined. They are known as the four C’s of the diamond trade. These are:
- Clarity- be aware of a diamond’s flawlessness and not just being eye-clean crystal
- Colour – diamonds should not just be clearly white but not necessarily blue white at the same time. A diamond’s colour can enhance or decrease its value.
- Carat Weight – is the value of the diamond in carats. However, two diamonds with the same carat weight does not mean having the same value.
- Cut – avoid confusing the diamond shape from its cut. Proportions, symmetry and polish are the three main criteria when measuring diamond cut.
Other characteristics of diamonds are diamond fluorescence and diamond enhancements. Diamond fluorescence means how the diamond glows under the blue light. This was first used to aid in diamond certifications but later turned into one of the basis for value. On the other hand, diamond enhancements mean the various treatments done to enhance a diamond. This may include bleaching, heating, laser, to name a few.
