22k Gold

There are some drawbacks with using pure gold in jewellery. Primarily, pure gold is too soft to mould and fashion into something wearable. This is why the next highest purity is 22k gold which combines hardness, malleability and the beauty of pure gold. It is noteworthy that most test kits such as the traditional ones using nitric acid will miss detecting 22k gold. Acid test is only good for testing yellow gold, but not white gold or platinum which it can confuse as ordinary steel. Fine gold is usually 22 karat gold, while most Indian gold are really 22k gold but sold lower as only 18 karat gold jewellery. The allure of gold is that it does not rust easily (oxidize) and is therefore perfect as jewellery material.
